In focus: inclusion
Groups begin plans for Homecoming Õ97
By Mamie Rogers

fter a semester of meetings and focus groups, preliminary plans have been drawn for a more inclusive Homecoming 1997 on Nov. 3-8 with the theme SMU: Taking Center Stage.
"Our goal is to make homecoming the most inclusive and exciting event for all SMU students, all alumni and all the community," said Student Chair Lindsay Feldhaus.
President of Student Foundation Josh Denney said he hopes more students will be on campus for the entire week for scheduled events, rather than just the weekend.
The entertainment week will focus on movies, TV and radio and will kick off Nov. 3 with a schoolwide party at the flagpole. Homecoming king and queen candidates will be presented, and there will be food and music.
A focus group with representatives from every campus organization developed plans for Thursday night's "Sports Showcase" spirit rally. This event will highlight athletics and recognize Meadows.
"Homecoming will pull in Meadows better than in the past," Denney said.
Feldhaus said she wants homecoming to be more spirited event and wants every student organization to participate in one aspect of homecoming.
"The theme is a really good statement about the university and success for the future," Feldhaus said. "SMU is in the spotlight right now, and it is time for SMU to shine."
Marc Hall ('71), alumni chair and owner of Amore Restaurant, Cisco Grill and Peggy Sue BBQ in Snider Plaza, said the upcoming homecoming will be a positive indicator that the university has a strong standing in the community.
"It is great for SMU to look ahead to a new century," Hall said. "This makes SMU very visible."
Hall said looking back at the themes of the last 20 years, this theme is a nice balance and complements the capital campaign.
"We want to draw in the neighborhood as much as possible," Hall said. "We want everyone to feel like it is their homecoming."
Feldhaus said SMU is gaining a greater sense of pride and hopes for more participation in homecoming.
"I really do think Lindsay Feldhaus and the Student Foundation have been extremely well prepared," Hall said. "Lindsay has done a terrific job."
