Goodbye, SMU

Ed Board graduating seniors bid farewell, luck to students

A
mong this year's graduating seniors, there are five members of The Daily Campus Editorial Board: Amy Clark, Mary Love Coan, Amy Gonzales, Michael Horwitz and Steve Sims. To mark their departure from our campus and our newsroom, we've decided to do something a little different. Today, each graduating Editorial Board member reflects on their SMU experiences as individuals instead of as a board. Amy Clark and Amy Gonzales, the former and current DC editors have both written viewpoints that appear on today's commentary pages. The others have this to say:

My years at SMU have taught me many things. But I'll spare you the sappy, sentimental stuff. For all of you who read this, I have one thing to say: Be persistent in everything you do. If you have a dream, then follow it. You have nothing to lose. I have learned that you will not get much from this university nor much in life if you sit around and wait for people to do things for you. I have achieved some incredible things in these four years at SMU by being persistent and determined to achieve my goals. I'm lucky that this is my nature, and if it isn't yours, then it's time to change.

I have also learned that SMU is located in a beneficial area in that there is a lot of opportunity in Dallas. OK, I have stated the obvious, but it is amazing how many people do not embark on this. Get internships because they get you the experience you need to face reality after college. Trust me on this one.

-Mary Love Coan

Well the time has come for the seniors of the Ed Board to comment one last time. In order to spare you of anymore media hype, I will not bombard you with my amateur opinions about the politically correct SMU administration. Instead, I will provide some profound and some not so recondite predictions. Sorority women will all be wondering who will get the prettiest, skinniest, richest women to pledge their respective houses. Fraternities will be asking their alumni for more support as President R. Gerald Turner continues his "War on Frats." Student Senate will be arguing about inconsequential matters and everyone else will still be clueless on who these ambitious politicians are let alone what they do. And without a doubt the entire SMU community will continue to search for new deans for each of its schools, as well as a whole new psychology department so that the sorority women will have something to major in besides public relations. Students will continue empirically testing the binge drinking theory of the "North Carolina Alcohol Experts." And finally perhaps my greatest prediction, SMU women will continue to wonder where all the good-looking guys are while those same horny young men will corrupt the first-year women who don't know a FIJI from a PHI PSI!

-Michael Horwitz

As I leave SMU, I have a few thoughts. SMU is a great place. It really bothers me to always hear people complain about life at SMU. I could not be happier with the four years I have had here. I find it hard to believe I could have had four more enjoyable years anywhere else. How many times have you heard someone say, "it seems like yesterday I just started school"? Unfortunately, this is true, and you do not realize or appreciate this fact until the time comes for you to graduate. I wish the best of luck to all my friends who will still be here in the coming years. Please enjoy yourselves. On another note, I am still in the process of evaluating one of my hopes for this past year. As some people may recall from an earlier editorial, I wrote that I "look forward to Rob Johnson doing something as president." Now that he is no longer president, I will admit that he did something. Lastly, I would like to wish my younger brother who will be coming to SMU next year the best. I hope he has a great four years. I know that I have.

-Steve Sims

On behalf of the entire Editorial Board, we wish everyone a great summer!
